If you fail
You cannot book a new appointment for the same day you sat the exam, because PSI must process and report results. PSI states that a candidate who fails on a Wednesday can call the next day, Thursday, and retest as soon as Friday, depending on seat availability. There is therefore no fixed waiting period in the bulletin; it is entered as null. Each sitting costs the $38 registration fee again (fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable).

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the New Jersey real estate salesperson exam?
110 scored questions. The vendor's content outline breaks them into a national portion of about 80 questions and a New Jersey portion of 30 questions, and you sit both in one appointment. A small number of unscored experimental questions (roughly 5 to 10) may be added on top; those do not count toward your score but do count against your testing time.
What score do you need to pass the New Jersey real estate exam?
You need 70%, which works out to 77 of the 110 scored questions. The published table shows a single combined passing score for the whole sitting rather than separate pass lines for the national and state sections.
How much does it cost to become a New Jersey real estate salesperson?
The PSI exam fee is $38 per sitting. If you pass, the initial license costs $160 payable to the State Treasurer, which the Commission itemizes as a $100 license fee, a $50 application fee, and a $10 Real Estate Guaranty Fund contribution. A separate fingerprinting fee is paid to the state's vendor.
How much education do you need before you can take the New Jersey exam?
75 hours of prelicensure education at a Commission-licensed school, completed before you can schedule the exam. Your school transmits your eligibility to PSI electronically, and that eligibility expires one year to the day it is issued, so you must pass the exam and apply for the license before it lapses.
How long is a New Jersey real estate license valid, and what does renewal take?
Two years. Licenses run on a biennial term and expire on June 30 of the second year. To renew you complete 12 hours of continuing education, at least 6 of them in the core topics, and pay the renewal fee. Salespersons first licensed in the second year of a term are not required to complete continuing education for that first renewal.
