Indiana Real Estate Practice Test (Free)
The Indiana real estate broker exam has 145 questions and a 4 hours limit. Below are the exact numbers the IN exam uses, and a free practice test to see where you stand.
The Indiana exam at a glance
- License
- Real Estate Broker
- Administered by
- Pearson VUE, under contract with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). Pearson VUE replaced PSI as the exam vendor effective March 3, 2025. The current vendor handbook is series 091500, dated March 2025.
- Total questions
- 145 (80 national and 50 Indiana-specific)
- Time limit
- 4 hours
- Passing score
- The exam is delivered and scored as two portions inside one 240 minute sitting: national/general (80 scored items) and Indiana licensure law (50 scored items). You must pass each portion. The Pearson VUE handbook lists a scaled passing score of 75 on each portion and states plainly that the scaled score is neither the number of questions answered correctly nor the percentage answered correctly, so no fixed count of correct answers is published. Indiana rule 876 IAC 6-6-3(d) phrases the same line as scoring at least 75 percent on each section.
- How it is taken
- In person only at Pearson VUE test centers. Walk-in appointments are not available and reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance. There is no remote or online proctored option for Indiana real estate.
- If you fail
- Indiana credits the portion you pass, so a candidate who fails one portion retakes only the failed portion (876 IAC 6-6-3(e)). Both portions must be passed within one year of the date the 90-hour pre-license course was completed, per the Pearson VUE handbook. Neither the handbook nor the rule publishes a waiting period or an attempt cap, so waitDays is null rather than guessed. Every attempt costs the full $55 exam fee.

Free Indiana practice questions
10 questions written for the Indiana exam, drawn from 12 in the ApexAgent bank. The correct answer and the reasoning are under each one.
1. Indiana issues one entry-level real estate license to new applicants. What is that license called?
- A. Real Estate Salesperson
- B. Real Estate Broker ✓
- C. Real Estate Agent
- D. Associate Broker
Why: The entry credential in Indiana is a Real Estate Broker license, granted under Indiana Code 25-34.1-3-4.1. The separate salesperson license was issued under IC 25-34.1-3-3.1, a section that has been repealed, and existing salesperson licenses were transitioned to broker licenses on July 1, 2014 (see IC 25-34.1-3-10 and IC 25-34.1-3-10.5). Indiana no longer issues a salesperson license.
2. How many members make up the Indiana Real Estate Commission?
- A. Nine
- B. Eleven
- C. Twelve ✓
- D. Fifteen
Why: Indiana Code 25-34.1-2-1(b) sets the commission at nine members who must be residents of a congressional district, one real estate member at large, and two citizen members at large, for a total of twelve. Each member is appointed by the governor.
3. Under Indiana Code 25-34.1-2-1, the two citizen members at large of the Indiana Real Estate Commission must:
- A. have held an active broker license for five years
- B. have never been associated with the real estate business except as a consumer ✓
- C. be licensed attorneys in Indiana
- D. be at least 60 years of age
Why: IC 25-34.1-2-1(b) requires the two citizen members at large to represent the general public, to be Indiana residents, and to have never been associated with the real estate business in any way other than as a consumer. The five-year broker experience requirement applies to the real estate members, not the citizen members.
4. What is the minimum age to obtain an Indiana real estate broker license?
- A. Eighteen ✓
- B. Nineteen
- C. Twenty-one
- D. Seventeen with parental consent
Why: Indiana Code 25-34.1-3-4.1(a)(1) requires an applicant to be at least eighteen years of age before applying for a broker license, and to have no conviction that would be a ground for discipline, that bears directly on the ability to practice competently, or that indicates a propensity to endanger the public.
5. How many hours of classroom instruction must an approved Indiana broker pre-license course provide?
- A. Sixty
- B. Seventy-five
- C. Ninety ✓
- D. One hundred thirty-five
Why: Indiana Administrative Code 876 IAC 6-4-1(a) requires a real estate broker course to consist of at least ninety hours of classroom instruction, including a required block of Indiana real estate license law and commission rules. The broker course examinations may count toward up to six of the ninety hours.
6. For an individual, how long is an Indiana real estate broker license valid before it must be renewed?
- A. One year
- B. Two years
- C. Three years ✓
- D. Four years
Why: Indiana Code 25-34.1-3-4.1(g) provides that, unless renewed, a broker license for individuals expires three years after the initial expiration date, so the renewal cycle is three years. The PLA fee schedule confirms broker renewals are due every three years.
7. A newly licensed Indiana broker must complete 30 hours of post-licensing education within what period?
- A. Six months of issuance
- B. The first two years after the license is issued ✓
- C. Three years, matching the renewal cycle
- D. Before sitting the broker exam
Why: Indiana Code 25-34.1-3-4.1(f) requires a broker licensed after June 30, 2014 to complete at least thirty hours of post-licensing education during the first two years after the license is issued, instead of regular continuing education. Rule 876 IAC 7-4-3 sets the 30-hour content, and the education comes after licensure, not before the exam.
8. The Indiana broker examination required of licensure applicants is divided into which two sections?
- A. A national section and an international section
- B. General real estate practices and Indiana licensure law ✓
- C. A salesperson section and a broker section
- D. A written section and a practical demonstration
Why: Indiana Administrative Code 876 IAC 6-6-3(a) divides the broker examination into two sections: general real estate practices and Indiana licensure law. Applicants seeking licensure by reciprocity take and pass only the Indiana licensure law section under 876 IAC 6-6-3(b).
9. Under 876 IAC 6-6-3(d), an applicant is deemed to have passed the Indiana broker examination upon attaining:
- A. a score of at least 75 percent on each section ✓
- B. an overall combined score of 70 percent
- C. a fixed 60 of 80 national items and 30 of 50 state items
- D. a passing designation at the vendor's sole discretion
Why: 876 IAC 6-6-3(d) states that an applicant is deemed to have passed the examination upon attaining a score of at least seventy-five percent on each section. The Pearson VUE handbook frames the same line as a scaled passing score of 75 per portion and cautions that the scaled score is not a raw count or raw percentage, so no fixed correct-answer count is published.
10. An Indiana applicant passes the general real estate practices section of the broker exam but fails the Indiana licensure law section. What does 876 IAC 6-6-3(e) require?
- A. Retake both sections from the beginning
- B. Retake only the failed Indiana licensure law section ✓
- C. Wait one full year before any retake
- D. Forfeit the passed section and apply as a new applicant
Why: 876 IAC 6-6-3(e) credits the applicant for the section passed and does not require that section to be retaken, unless the applicant must again comply with the education requirement. The credit lasts only while the applicant satisfies the one-year window tied to completing the pre-license course.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the entry-level Indiana real estate license a salesperson or a broker?
- It is a broker license. Indiana retired the separate salesperson license on July 1, 2014 and now issues only a broker license to new candidates, so the entry credential is Real Estate Broker (Indiana Code 25-34.1-3-4.1). A later tier, the Managing Broker designation, is an additional step that requires three years of active Indiana broker licensure, a 24-hour managing broker course, and passage of the broker exam. Out-of-state guides that still print Indiana salesperson are describing a retired title.
- How is the Indiana real estate exam structured, and what score do you need to pass?
- The broker exam (series ReIN-Broker) is 145 questions in a single 240 minute sitting, split into two separately scored portions: national/general real estate practice (80 scored items plus 5 unscored pretest items) and Indiana licensure law (50 scored items plus 5 to 10 unscored pretest items). You must pass each portion (876 IAC 6-6-3). Pearson VUE lists a scaled passing score of 75 per portion and notes the scaled score is not a raw count or a raw percentage, so no fixed number of correct answers is published. The rule text at 876 IAC 6-6-3(d) describes the same line as at least 75 percent on each section.
- If you fail one portion of the Indiana exam, do you have to retake both?
- No. Under 876 IAC 6-6-3(e), Indiana credits the portion you passed and you only need to retake the portion you failed, provided you are not being required to redo the education requirement. Both portions must be passed within one year of the date you finished the 90-hour pre-license course, per the Pearson VUE candidate handbook. Each reservation carries the full $55 exam fee, and there is no published waiting period or attempt limit.
- What education does Indiana require before and after the broker license is issued?
- Before the exam you must complete a Commission-approved 90-hour broker pre-license course (876 IAC 6-4-1). After the license is issued, and within the first two years, a new broker must complete 30 hours of post-licensing education instead of regular continuing education, set out in 876 IAC 7-4-3 as 6 hours Indiana real estate transactions, 6 hours financing, 10 hours business planning and marketing, 5 hours negotiating and counseling, 1 hour cultural diversity and fair housing, and 2 hours construction (IC 25-34.1-3-4.1(f)). After that, brokers complete 12 hours of continuing education per CE year, which runs July 1 through June 30 (876 IAC 7-5-1).
- How much does it cost to get an Indiana real estate broker license, and how often does it renew?
- The Pearson VUE exam fee is $55 per attempt, paid when you reserve. The IPLA broker license application fee is $60, nonrefundable, per the PLA Real Estate Licensing Information page and State Form 44176. A broker license renews every three years at $60, and the PLA fee schedule lists a $120 reinstatement fee for a license expired more than three years (IC 25-34.1-3-4.1(g)). A broker who lets the license expire three or more years must also complete 36 hours of continuing education and retake the state portion of the exam; at nine or more years the full 90-hour course and both exam portions are required again.
